The Myth of The Generational Curses

The Myth of Generational Curses

By Apostle Felix

28  And it shall come to pass, that like as I have watched over them, to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict; so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, saith the LORD.

29  In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.

30  But every one shall die for his own iniquity: every man that eateth the sour grape, his teeth shall be set on edge.

Jeremiah 31: 28 – 30

The subject of generational curse is one of the subjects taught and preached in churches. It seems to be a powerful bait to keep people in church. Most of the church conferences are organized around the breaking of generational curses. What is a generational curse? It is a curse that runs in the family blood. So then, everyone born into the kingdom of God ought to identify the family curse and break it. The exercise itself feels like a bottomless pit. How far will one go back into his/her family to trace the curses and repent on behalf of the sins of the forefathers committed. It’s like a mirage. Something that no one can achieve. This is the reason why believers go about each year breaking curses in their lives. The question is then, can a christian, born of the Spirit of God and blessed of the Lord be under generational curses?

8  Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:

9  Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me,  A believer is one that has been born into the kingdom of God, and has left the kingdom of darkness. A believer is born of the incorruptible seed, which is the word of God. A curse can be regarded as a corruption.

Deuteronomy 5: 8, 9

The concept of generational curse is drawn from scriptures like one above. These scriptures state that God punishes children for the sins of their fathers, extending to third and fourth generations. However, the scripture from Ezekiel 18: 20, emphasizes the responsibility of an individual.

20  The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

Ezekiel 18: 20

According to the portion of scripture above, no one should be punished for the sins of another. The soul that sins is held responsible. And besides, Galatians 3: 13, suggests that Christ’s sacrifice on the cross has redeemed believers from the curse of the law, implying that the consequences of past sins, including generational curses, are broken through faith in Christ. A believer has switched lineage from the cursed lineage to the blessed lineage.

3  Every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realm has already been lavished upon us as a love gift from our wonderful heavenly Father, the Father of our Lord Jesus—all because he sees us wrapped into Christ. This is why we celebrate him with all our hearts!

Ephesians 1: 3

13  Yet, Christ paid the full price to set us free from the curse of the law. He absorbed it completely as he became a curse in our place. For it is written: “Everyone who is hung upon a tree is doubly cursed.”

Galatians 3: 13

The above scriptures from Jeremiah 31: 28 – 30, explicitly informs us that the individual shall be responsibility for his sins. The sour grape shall only affect the teeth of the one eating it. The generational curse has become a scandalous subject in the body of Christ. It has become a means of swindling money from people by distorting the word of God. Does Jesus Christ save us in instalments? The born again experience is a very powerful experience in the sense that a believer is delivered from the power of the kingdom of darkness and translated in to the kingdom God.

13  He has rescued us completely from the tyrannical rule of darkness and has translated us into the kingdom realm of his beloved Son.

Colossians 1: 13

Child of God, you have been set free from every known and unknown curse the day you received Christ as your Lord and Saviour. The day Christ came into your life, your nature changed from a sinner to a righteous one. You may not feel like it, but that is your reality. You are no longer under the Lordship of satan, but Christ is in you. Whom the Son has set free is free indeed.

36  So if the Son sets you free from sin, then become a true son and be unquestionably free!

John 8: 36

If you are born of God, then you have been set free completely.
