The Excellency of God’s Power

The Excellency of God’s Power

By Apostle Felix

7  We are like common clay jars that carry this glorious treasure within, so that the extraordinary overflow of power will be seen as God’s, not ours.

2 Corinthians 4: 7

The scripture above by the apostle Paul informs us about the immanent divine power that resides in every believer in Christ. This is the demonstration of God’s love and grace to allow His divine presence to dwell in a common man, like you and me. This is a unique case where God decides to domicile in a man. We are like containers, whose content is God. Therefore, the extraordinary power of God should be the overflow in every believer’s life. Jesus said that from our inner most being shall flow living water.

38  Believe in me so that rivers of living water will burst out from within you, flowing from your innermost being, just like the Scripture says!”
39  Jesus was prophesying about the Holy Spirit that believers were being prepared to receive. But the Holy Spirit had not yet been poured out upon them, because Jesus had not yet been unveiled in his full splendor.

John 7: 38, 39

Why is it then that we hardly see the flow of God’s power in believers? The problem cannot be with God’s inability to fulfill His word. God is always faithful. He is always willing to demonstrate His power through anyone. When we talk about power, we are not referring to people falling down and vomiting. Real power is transformative. It is the power to change people’s lives from devil’s nature to Christ’s nature. Paul talked about this power in this manner:

16  I refuse to be ashamed of sharing the wonderful message of God’s liberating power unleashed in us through Christ! For I am thrilled to preach that everyone who believes is saved—the Jew first, and then people everywhere!
17  This gospel unveils a continual revelation of God’s righteousness—a perfect righteousness given to us when we believe. And it moves us from receiving life through faith, to the power of living by faith. This is what the Scripture means when it says: “We are right with God through life-giving faith!”

Romans 1: 16, 17

This power Paul was talking about is not the power to make people fall down. It’s the power to transform lives. It is the gospel that is able to transform a Jew from a legalistic and a segregationist to a gracious and inclusive individual. Saul, who later became apostle Paul was a legalistic person, who killed christians for preaching the gospel. But when he had an encounter with Jesus, his life changed and became a preacher of  note.

7  Yet all of the accomplishments that I once took credit for, I’ve now forsaken them and I regard it all as nothing compared to the delight of experiencing Jesus Christ as my Lord!
8  To truly know him meant letting go of everything from my past and throwing all my boasting on the garbage heap. It’s all like a pile of manure to me now, so that I may be enriched in the reality of knowing Jesus Christ and embrace him as Lord in all of his greatness.

Philippians 3: 7, 8

The power of God is demonstrated through the knowledge of Christ. The knowledge of Christ is the transformative power of God. It is the excellency of God’s power. What is excellency? Excellency is a word derived from the word, huperbole, which means ‘A throwing beyond others, super-eminence, pre-eminence, abundance (far more exceeding, more excellent, beyond (out of) measure.’ It is a word that suggests superiority. The knowledge of Christ is superior to any other knowledge. And this is the knowledge that God has a bias for. Jesus said  that He is the Truth and the knowledge of that Truth sets the recipients of knowledge free.

Therefore, our theme for 2026 is taken from 2 Corinthians 4: 7, that exhorts us to hold Christ as the highest supreme being in our lives. Christ can only be known by revelation, by the inspiration of the Spirit through His word. The word is Christ that has shone in our hearts through His word. Therefore, in the year 2026, it is in order to continue with our quest to know Christ and the power of His resurrection. Jesus Christ is the excellency of God. Hence, our theme “Excellency of Christ.”
