Sonship

Sonship

By Apostle Felix

3  And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.”
4  And behold, the word of the LORD came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.”

Genesis 15: 3, 4

Sonship gives us the access to the blessing of the father. Servants work for their wages because they are hirelings. Sons are heirs. In Abraham’s account, he wanted to pass on the blessing to his servant, Eliezer. This was because he had no son of his own. God had promised him a son, but the promise of a son delayed to come and Abraham was growing desperate. His faithful servant, Eliezer wa appointed to be the one to inherit the blessing. But God intervened and stopped the plan of leaving the inheritance to the servant.

6  And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”
Gal 4:7  So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

Galatians 4: 6

Abraham’s account had a message of God’s plan of blessing man through an apparatus of family. Abraham leaving the blessing to his servant would have communicated a wrong message of obtaining the blessing of God through works. He had to maintain consistence in the revelation of grace so that the blessing can be the product of grace, and not works. Eliezer’s relationship with Abraham was work based. Eliezer related with Abraham as his master, whom he worked for, for wages. The blessing is not attracted to works, but it produces works. It is always attracted to grace and produces works. It is not works that produces the blessing, but the blessing produces works.

21  Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not listen to the law?
22  For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave woman and one by a free woman.
23  But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise.

Galatians 4: 21 – 23

Abraham had a son with his wife, Sara’s maid servant, Hagar. They both grew desperate for a son because time was running out on them. So, Sara improvised a strategy to produce a son through her servant. A son was born but was not a son of promise. Ishmael was born according to the flesh. He was a product of works. Now, God does not want man’s help. They wanted to help God because He was taking too long. God forbade Abraham from leaving the blessing to Ishmael, even though he was the first born. The blessing had to go to Isaac,  a son of promise. His birth was a miraculous birth. Sara gave birth at ninety when she was on menopause and the problem she had of barrenness.

13  For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith.

Romans 4: 13

It took faith in God’s Word for Abraham and Sara to go ahead and produce Isaac. Isaac was a product of grace and only the product of grace receives the blessing. Ishmael did not receive the blessing because he was a product of the flesh. You are a son and daughter of the Most High God. God is your Father through Christ Jesus.

16  Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.

Galatians 3: 16

25  But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian,
26  for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.
27  For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Galatians 3: 25 – 27

You are a son, who has been born, not of corruptible, but incorruptible seed, which is the word of God. The Word of God is Christ and you have been born of Christ. Since you are a  son, God, the Father has blessed you in every way not because of what you do or what you have already done. It is the grace of God.
