Purpose of Leadership Gifts Part 1

And he has appointed some with grace to be apostles, and some with grace to be prophets, and some with grace to be evangelists, and some with grace to be pastors, and some with grace to be teachers.
Ephesians 4: 11

By Apostle Felix

God has given leaders to the church for the purpose of training. In this devotion, we shall focus on the purpose of the ministerial gifts Christ has given to the church. Understanding is vital to the proper and correct use of a thing. Abuse is inevitable where understanding lacks regarding the use of a thing.

The church leadership is suffering abuse due to lack of understanding. The leadership gifts listed in Ephesians 4: 11 have a well-defined purpose. And their purpose is to equip the saints for the work of ministry.

The leadership gifts mentioned in Ephesians 4 are prophet, apostle, evangelist, pastor and teacher. These are training of trainers gifts. Their main purpose is to train believers in various ministries, so that they will be able to do the works of Christ.

The trainers should be equipped themselves and familiar with the curriculum. Jesus called His first class and trained them for three and half years. Jesus had a specific curriculum that He used.

For I’m not speaking as someone who is self-appointed, but I speak by the authority of the Father himself who sent me, and who instructed me what to say.
John 12: 49

Jesus had a curriculum and was well vexed in it. He did not teach another message but the message He was sent to deliver – Himself.

First and foremost, the trainers (the five-fold ministry) need training. Training cannot be substituted by the anointing. We need both. Jesus’ first class (the disciples) were with Jesus for three and half years and then received the Holy Spirit after Jesus had left.

We have very anointed untrained individuals, who do not understand the curriculum of Christ. Hence, producing very carnal Christians, whose lives does not look anything like Christ.

Why do we have believers that are being tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine? It is because the trainers do not know the doctrine of Christ.

That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.
Ephesians 4: 14
