Dominion Over Sin Part 3

THE PURPOSE OF THE LAW

By Apostle Felix

Why then was the law given? It was meant to be an intermediary agreement added after God gave the promise of the coming One! It was given to show men how guilty they are, and it remained in force until the Seed was born to fulfill the promises given to Abraham. When God gave the law, he didn’t give it to them directly, for he gave it first to the angels; they gave it to Moses, his mediator, who then gave it to the people. Galatians 3: 19 TPT

The law was given to Israel for the purpose of making man to realize his need for the Savior. It kept man in line, pointing to the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world. The law and the prophets pointed to Jesus, the Redeemer. John, the baptist who was the last Old Testament prophet, pointed men to Jesus as the Lamb of God. He represented the law as one sent to prepare the way of the Lord.

For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Matthew 3: 3

John, the baptist introduced Jesus as the Messiah. He stood in for Moses and all the prophets when he said that he was not the Messiah, but one that had been sent by God to prepare the way for the Lord. How did John, the baptist prepare the way? The law and prophets, whom John the baptist represented prepared the way for the Lord.

During those days, everyone was gripped with messianic expectations, believing the Messiah could come at any moment, and many began to wonder if John might be the Christ. But John made it clear by telling them, “There is one coming who is mightier than I. He is supreme. In fact, I’m not worthy of even being his slave. I can only baptize you in this river, but he will baptize you into the Spirit of holiness and into his raging fire. Luke 3: 15, 16

The law exposed man’s sinfulness and his need of salvation through Christ alone. John, the baptist denied been the Messiah. He represented the law and prophets that had no power to save. The law was good but had no power to save. It’s purpose was to reveal the sinfulness of man. Therefore, the law cannot be relied on, but Christ. Any attempt to live by the law leads to living perpetually in condemnation. The law handed you and me over to Jesus, when John, the baptist said behold…

The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. John 1: 29
