A Resurrected Life
By Apostle Felix
6 Notice that I’ve taken your brothers, the descendants of Levi, from among the Israelis, giving them to you as a gift from the LORD to perform the service of the Tent of Meeting. 7 Now you and your sons with you are to maintain your priestly duties and all matters that concern the altar and what is housed within the veil. You are to perform these services. I’m giving you the priesthood as a gift of service, but any unauthorized person who approaches is to be put to death. Numbers 18: 6, 7
The Ministry of the High Priest
Under the Old Covenant, the priest hood was only allotted to the tribe of Levi. The first High Priest was Aaron and his two sons served as priests. A priest was dedicated to serving in the sanctuary, to insure that all what God had commanded was followed to the letter. Only the high priest and priests were allowed to minister before the Lord in the sanctuary. The priests had to be whole and holy in their conduct.
6 They are to be holy to their God. They are not to defile the name of their God, because they’re the ones who bring the offerings of the LORD made by fire—the food of their God—so they are to be holy. 7 “They are not to marry a prostitute, a woman who has been dishonored, or who was divorced from her husband, because the priest is holy to his God. 8 Consecrate him, because he’s the one who offers the food of your God. He is to be holy for you, because I the LORD—the one who sanctifies you—am holy. Leviticus 21: 6 – 8
In the Old Testament, the High Priest served as a mediator between God and the people. He acted as a representative of the people before God, offering sacrifices on their behalf. He was responsible for overseeing the daily and yearly sacrifices. The High Priest ministry foreshadowed the ministry of Jesus Christ as the ultimate High Priest. Aaron and all the High Priests that came after him did not offer themselves but took animals for the sacrifices instead. The High Priest’s roles and practices were all a system that pointed to God’s plan of salvation for humanity through the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus.
26 We need such a high priest—one who is holy, innocent, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. 27 He has no need to offer sacrifices every day like high priests do, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he sacrificed himself. 28 For the Law appoints as high priests men who are weak, but the promised oath, which came after the Law, results in a Son who is eternally perfect. Hebrews 7: 26 – 28
