Money And Christmas
By Apostle Felix
6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.Luke 2: 6, 7
Joseph and Mary traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem to complete a mandatory census. It was mandatory for everyone in the Roman Empire to travel to his/her hometown for census. Joseph was aware of the risk they had to take to travel that distance while Mary was almost due to deliver. So, they went prepared enough in case Mary went into labour while they they were in Bethlehem. And exactly that’s what happened. Mary went into labour while in Bethlehem. They carried baby clothes, blankets and some money along with them. They did not leave Nazareth empty handed. They had something with them. They could not find a room in Bethlehem because all the rooms were booked. People had come from everywhere for the census.
The first Christmas, if we can call it also, was done in contentment. Contentment is a state of peaceful satisfaction, inner happiness, and being at ease with your current life, situation, and self, not requiring perfection or external validation, but rather appreciating what you have and accepting the present moment without restlessness or excessive desire. They cut their coat according to the cloth they had. Many get stressed during the festive season because of the pressure to impress the neighbours. The pressure to spend the money one does not have is so high. Hence, individuals go into debts. My advise to you. Be content. Spend wisely. Do not overspend for validation.
Before you begin to spend your money in December, first secure January. Avoid spending January money in December. Think of the January expenditure and settle it before the year ends. Pay your January bills before you go on holiday. Reserve some money for school fees, uniforms and stationery. Pay your house mortgage, car loan, and buy food enough to last until 31st January. The first people to experience Christmas were moderate. Be moderate, too.
If you cannot afford a holiday in Swakopmund or Cape Town find something else that you can do as a family within your budget. Drive to a near place and have fun. Do not stress! Organize a braii with friends, who have not traveled too, and have fun. December can be stressful, but January can be more stressful if one wanted to impress others in December by spending the money that is not there.
Occupy yourself with the kingdom of God business. Reach out more to others with gospel of Christ. I think that is the best way of sending Christmas. Visit some people you were not able to visit due to the busyness of work.
