The Curse of Disunity Part 1

1  And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. 
2  And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. 
3  And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. 
4  And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. 
5  And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. 
6  And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. 
7  Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. 
8  So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. 
9  Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

Over the years as a Christian, I have witnessed disunity caused by just a few disgruntled individuals. I joined the church with a mindset that believers do not gossip and hate one another. It was a shock for me to witness divisive believers in the church. I could not understand that such people with divisive intentions were part of the church of our Lord Jesus Christ. I thought believers were all loving people. But that was not the case. I could not understand why someone would commit his/her life to carrying evil reports about other brethren around that are causing disunity among the brethren.  I have had firsthand encounters regarding this problem of divisive people in the church. They are dangerous.

Now, let us consider God’s intention of unity for mankind. God’s plan for man is to live in unity with God and his fellow man. I have titled this devotional, “The curse of disunity” for a reason. A curse is not what we usually think a curse is. A curse is not getting involved in a car accident or not having a husband or wife. A curse is none of those things. A curse is simply the absence of God in one’s life. The curse in Genesis is the loss of God’s presence. How did man lose God’s presence? He rejected the life of God and settled for union with creation. God had intended for union with man to operate maximally on the earth. But man chose to be one with the created instead of the Creator.

26  And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 

Genesis 1: 26

God created a human race, which started as one unity, Adam. The name Adam was initially meant to identify the human race. It means “man,” “earth,” or “Humanity.” The word man in Genesis chapter one verse twenty-six is Adam, which is “Adama” in Hebrew. Adam is a human species and is distinct from the rest of God’s creation. Adam’s species was the human race, and consisted of male and female in one unity. God did not make two separate humans and then brought them together. He created one and took one from one, and then pronounced them one as husband and wife.

8  For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man.
9  Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
10  For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.
11  Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.
12  For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.

1 Corinthians 11: 8 – 12

There is only one human race. This is because God created one man, Adam, from whom He took a woman, Eve. Marriage is a revelation of God’s relationship with man. The man, Adam, was made to sleep, which is death figuratively, and a woman was taken from his side. That was a typology of Jesus’ death, giving birth to the church. So, the church was in Christ before His death.

4  Sharing in his death by our baptism means that we were co-buried and entombed with him, so that when the Father’s glory raised Christ from the dead, we were also raised with him. We have been co-resurrected with him so that we could be empowered to walk in the freshness of new life.
