The Believer’s Authority

18  The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
19  And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
20  Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,
21  Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:
22  And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
23  Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

Ephesians 1: 18 – 23

Every believer has the authority of Christ. It has been given to everyone born of God. Jesus gave authority to His disciples and they went around exercising it over devils. The disciples drove out devils before Jesus defeated the enemy through His death and resurrection. If the disciples of Jesus could exercise authority  over the kingdom of darkness, how much then after the total defeat of satan and his cohorts. There is no way the devils can ever have an upper in your life. You have absolute authority over them. And this authority is in the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

15  And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. 

Colossians 2: 15

Jesus defeated satan and His kingdom by stripping away from them every weapon and spiritual authority and power. The devil is not in your class, not at all. You are in Jesus’ class and this class is far way above satan’s class. You are not contending and trying to defeat satan. No, he has already been defeated and you and I are enforcing the victory we have in Christ over satan. Your victory has already been set. You are not trying to gain authority over satan over time. The authority was given to you the day you accepted Jesus as your Lord and Saviour.

My journey with the Lord started in February 1994. Before I got saved, I was a very fearful person especially when I went to sleep in the dark. I really never wanted my bedroom light to be switched off. And then we had this strange cats that used to come in our yard every night to cry through out the night. It was very disturbing and at the same time eerie. So, my father and I would wake up almost every time to chase this strange cats. They used to come in large numbers. This particular night when they came I was now born again. They did not only come into the yard but came right at my bedroom window to cry. It was like the cats where inside my bedroom. I was very afraid off course and wanted to go and call for my  father. But the Holy Spirit asked me to be still and only praise His name. I was barely days in the Lord and did not know how to handle such cases. But the Holy Spirit instructed me to praise the Lord in such an eerie situation. I decided to obey the prompting of the Spirit, and as soon as I opened my mouth to whisper praise unto the Lord, the cats abruptly stopped to make noise. I was surprised by the sudden silence and that made me to stop praying. I waited for a while for the cats to start another session of crying, but that never happened again since. Days, weeks, months and years rolled by and the cats never came back. My story may sound hilarious but the Lord was teaching me the believer’s authority. I started gaining confidence in God. I started realizing that I have authority over satan and his demon spirits. Child of God, the authority you have in Christ in unmatchable.

6  And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
7  That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. 

Ephesians 2: 6, 7

Our authority is in Christ. It is realized by resting in Christ. We rest in the finish work of Christ. The power and authority is not in our shouting or stomping of our feet, but in our resting in Christ. The word of God says, ‘Be still and know that I am God.’

10  Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. 

Psalm 46: 10

Our authority is in the acknowledgement of who we are in Christ. You are not just mere man. You are a son of the most High God. Your position of authority is heavenly, and expressing it in the earth. You are an heavenly citizen, who is carrying out the heavenly mandate on earth. Your authority is not of this world. It is far more superior than all the earthly authorities put together.
