14  Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

Proverbs 11: 14

22  Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.

6  For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.

In a world that frequently rejects guidance, the story of King Solomon serves as a powerful warning. Celebrated as the wisest man of his era, the king of Israel nevertheless made foolish errors that jeopardized his kingdom’s future. These missteps suggest he pushed away his advisors’ wise counsel. Ironically, Solomon wrote the Book of Proverbs based on his own lived experiences and those of others, turning personal lessons into timeless wisdom for anyone willing to listen.

13  Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
14  For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. 

Ecclesiastes 12: 13, 14

Solomon ultimately realized that true victory in life is found only within God’s will. While society equates winning with affluence, material wealth and accolades fall short of our ultimate purpose. Solomon had access to every luxury imaginable, yet he concluded that it was all meaningless chasing after the wind. Regrettably, great affluence often leads to a rejection of sound guidance. This prideful blind spot was passed down to Solomon’s son, Rehoboam, who dismissed the kingdom’s elders to follow the foolish advice of his childhood friends. On the premise of this single refused warning, the once-unified kingdom of Israel was permanently torn apart.

6  And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people?
7  And they spake unto him, saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.
8  But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him, that stood before him. 

2 Chronicles 10: 6- 8

Rehoboam rejected the counsel of the elders who had served his father. Having witnessed King Solomon make both wise choices and foolish mistakes, these advisors possessed highly credible insights forged through decades of experience, wisdom, victories, and defeats. Instead, Rehoboam turned to his peers—inexperienced novices driven by a desire for limelight and affluence. Because he rejected the mature wisdom of the elders in favor of his friends’ reckless advice, Rehoboam completely lost control over ten of the tribes of Israel.

Counsel is vital to life, and the people you listen to will ultimately determine your direction. Just as toxic advice from novice friends can destroy lives and marriages, godly counsel can preserve them. Seek guidance from God-fearing individuals who possess true wisdom, regardless of their age. None of us can afford to assume we know it all. Whether navigating marriage, career, ministry, or business, look for wise mentors—because there is always safety in a multitude of counselors.
