The Wedding Feast

The Wedding Feast

By Apostle Felix

Mat 22:8  “Then the king said to his servants, ‘The wedding feast is ready, yet those who had been invited to attend didn’t deserve the honor.
Mat 22:9  Now I want you to go into the streets and alleyways and invite anyone and everyone you find to come and enjoy the wedding feast in honor of my son.’

Matthew 22: 8, 9

Jesus gave a parable about a wedding feast, in which a king had invited guests for his son’s wedding. The invitation was first made to noble people, who later rejected the invitation. The ancient times, invitations were made with no specific date indicated for the wedding. The invited guests were then notified to attend once all preparations are done and ready. The invited guests would only go when all is set and ready. The weddings, in most cases were extravagant in nature. People would eat and drink to the full. The host should make certain there was enough food and drinks for the guests. It was an embarrassment on the host’s part to run out of food and drink. Jesus at the wedding in Cana saved the day when He turned water into wine. It would have been a shame to the host and wedding organizers.

3. but with so many guests in attendance, they ran out of wine. And when Mary realized it, she came to him and asked, “They have no wine, can’t you do something about it?”

John 2: 3

Now, in the parable of the wedding feast, the host was a king who had prepared an extravagant wedding for his son. To the king’s disappointment and dismay, the guests turned down the invitation. But the king did not give up, he still sent his servants to call the invited guests to the wedding feasts for his son and his bride. Surprisingly, the invited guests were not so impressed with the invitation and they decided to go about their daily businesses. Some even mistreated and killed some of the king’s servants. The king was was very furious over the killing of his servants. He sent his soldiers to kills the culprits.

6  And the rest seized the king’s messengers and shamefully mistreated them, and even killed them.
7  This infuriated the king! So he sent his soldiers to execute those murderers and had their city burned to the ground.

Matthew 22: 6, 7

The king turned to people who were from the lowest tier of society. He sent his servants to go into the alleyways and streets and invite everyone they come across. The rejected of the society, such as beggars, prostitutes, drunkards and all you can think of. There was enough room for all.

Lessons

1. The gospel is the message of all is ready. Just come and receive. You don’t come to God’s feast and prepare your own meal. He has made it ready for you; you come to receive. This is the message of grace. The grace of God is extravagant.

2. The invited guests rejected the free feast and decided to go and work. The enemy of grace is religion. Man finds grace to be too wonderful to be true. How can God just decide to show mercy without demanding a form of payment or punishment from man.

3. The Lord’s desire is that everyone comes to the saving grace of Christ. He is patient with us. He will keep on inviting and also inviting people from every race and tongue.

4. God calls the undeserving people. Salvation is by grace alone.
