The Righteous Are Bold

1  The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.

Proverbs 28: 1

A lion is an animal with a unique character compared to other animals. It is called the king of the jungle because of its courage and tenacity. It does not easily get intimidated by other animals, no matter how big they are. It is an animal that would attempt to bring down an elephant. It is bold. The Proverb writer compared the righteous’ boldness to that of a lion. Boldness is key to taking over the territory that the Lord has allocated to you. Before Israel crossed into the promised land, God told Joshua to be bold and courageous.

2  Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.
6  Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.
7  Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.

Joshua 1: 2, 6, 7

Joshua and the children of Israel had lived in the wilderness for forty years after their emancipation from Egypt. Some of the young men aged forty and under were born in the wilderness. They did not know any other kind of life but the wilderness. The crossing over to take over the land was a dream of every young man. They were looking forward to settling in a civilised society. But there was an obstacle between their desire and the reality. The obstacle was the nations in the Promised Land. The nations were much stronger than Israel. They were more organised, and their cities were fortified. The children of Israel realised that taking over would not be as easy as one would desire.

10  If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small.

Proverbs 24: 10

Saint, taking over is not for the faint. The land we are supposed to take over is not free of wolves and adversaries. Taking over takes a certain amount of boldness. This is because God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind, 2 Timothy 1: 7. As a child of God, boldness is not of your own. It has been deposited in you when you were born into the kingdom of God through Christ Jesus. You have been clothed with a robe of righteousness that has taken away any form of timidity. The nature of the robe on your life would either rob your confidence or clothe you with it. Adam and Eve were bold before the fall because they were clothed with God’s glory. But when the glory departed, Adam and Eve became fearful upon sinning against the Lord. Your boldness is in Christ. Righteous living reinforces your boldness.
