72  So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.

Psalm 78: 70 – 72

Integrity is the quality of being honest, possessing strong, unyielding moral principles, and maintaining a state of wholeness and undivided character. It encompasses moral uprightness, consistency, incorruptibility, and reliability. In Psalm 78:72, the Hebrew word used for integrity is Tom, which translates to completeness, moral innocence, perfection, and uprightness. This virtue plays a critical role in achieving true success. In the professional world, integrity is one of the top qualities employers seek. Alongside competence, it is a non-negotiable virtue for both individuals and organisations. In fact, competence alone is never enough—many highly capable people ultimately fail in life simply due to a lack of integrity.

32  He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.

Proverbs 16: 32

Many mighty figures have fallen due to a lack of integrity. Take Samson, for example. Although he was a man of immense physical strength, he was spiritually inconsistent when it came to obeying the commands of the Lord. Having been consecrated from birth as a Nazirite, he was bound by a sacred vow. Under this covenant, he was strictly forbidden from cutting his hair, drinking wine, or touching a dead body.

5  For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines. 

Judges 13: 5

3  He shall separate himself from wine and strong drink, and shall drink no vinegar of wine, or vinegar of strong drink, neither shall he drink any liquor of grapes, nor eat moist grapes, or dried.

Numbers 6: 3

6  All the days that he separateth himself unto the LORD he shall come at no dead body.

Samson was divinely selected and called to live a life completely set apart for the Lord as a Nazirite. Unfortunately, he failed to uphold this holy calling and repeatedly violated his sacred vows. A clear turning point of compromise occurred when he ate honey directly from the carcass of a lion he had slain—an act strictly forbidden by the laws of ritual purity. Furthermore, while Judges 14 does not explicitly state that Samson drank alcohol at his wedding feast, the worldly environment and his overall lifestyle directly conflicted with the sobriety demanded of a Nazirite. Despite being heavily anointed by God, he refused to embody a life that truly honoured Him.
Ultimately, Samson’s life of persistent compromise cost him his eyesight and led to a premature, tragic death. It is a sobering reality that a man endowed with such unprecedented supernatural power died captive in the enemy’s camp. Though he killed thousands of Philistines in his final moments, his death lacked the honour intended for his destiny. His lack of integrity cut his life short, transforming a chosen deliverer into an object of mockery.
Therefore, child of God, refrain from compromising the word of the Lord. True integrity requires establishing the word of God as the unchanging standard for your life. Do not allow yourself to succumb to the intense pressures of this world. Stand firmly upon His truth, and refuse to bend.
