SERVANTHOOD

But this is not your calling. You will lead by a completely different model. The greatest one among you will live as the one who is called to serve others, because the greatest honor and authority is reserved for the one with the heart of a servant. For even the Son of Man did not come expecting to be served by everyone, but to serve everyone, and to give his life in exchange for the salvation of many. Matthew 20: 26 – 28

This is a continuation from yesterday’s study on leadership. We started looking at the characteristics of servanthood leadership. We looked at humility, and today we will look at patience and love.

Characteristics of Servanthood Leadership

2. Patience

A leader ought to be consistent in thought, vision and service. Consistence is key to leadership. Leadership comes with challenges, therefore a leader need to develop a backbone of steel to withstand turbulent seasons of leadership.

So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure: 2 Thessalonians 1: 4

3. Love

Leaders love people. The love for people should be stronger than one’s love for a position, title and it’s benefits. The abuse of power in leadership is due to one loving a position more than the people. Loving leaders use the law to protect the people, unlike using the law to break the people. Greediness has become a motivation of serving the Lord. So, some are in ministry for what they can gain out of it and people have become a commodity to be monetized.

For unlike so many, we are not peddlers of God’s Word who water down the message. We are those sent from God with pure motives, who speak in the sight of God from our union with Christ. 2 Corinthians 2: 17

Servant leaders are there to help and protect their people. Their joy is to see people’s lives getting better day by day. Leaders lay their lives down for others. They live for others, not necessarily for themselves. The people we call leaders, are not leaders. They are charlatans. They are in those positions for their bellies. You will have charlatans in political governments, church, organizations etc.
