The Curse of Disunity Part 5

The Reset

5  And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
6  And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
7  And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
8  But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. 

Genesis 6: 5 – 8

The wickedness had multiplied in the earth due to man’s independence from God. He had united himself with darkness and began to multiply wickedness relentlessly. Before I talk about the reset, let me address the subject of God repenting. It can be confusing for someone reading that God repented after being told that God is all-knowing.  The usage of the word repent is that there are several figures of speech in the Bible that accommodate the human level of understanding. One is anthropomorphism, where physical features are ascribed to God. And the other is anthropopathism, whereby human emotions are sometimes attributed to God. To say, therefore, that God “repented,” or that he was “grieved,” is simply a symbolic way of asserting that man’s conduct did not meet the divine standard. This language vividly portrays, from a human perspective, God’s displeasure at our rebellion. It is an attempt to try to explain the gravity of man’s situation in human terms. God does not repent, nor does he change. He is eternal.

19  God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

God knows the end from the beginning. God knew that man would sin against Him and provided a plan of redemption for man. The account of Noah was one of the ways God communicated His displeasure at man’s wickedness and His redemptive plan.

37  But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
38  For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark,
39  And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 

Matthew 24: 37 – 39

The reset was a demonstration of God’s grace and mercy. It was His love reaching out to man to inform him of His intentions to save man from his sins. The entire generation was wiped out by the waters, except Noah and his family. Only eight people in total were saved.
