The Commission

The Commission

By Apostle Felix

18  Then Jesus came close to them and said, “All the authority of the universe has been given to me. 19  Now go in my authority and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. 20  And teach them to faithfully follow all that I have commanded you. And never forget that I am with you every day, even to the completion of this age.” Matthew 28: 18 – 20

After His resurrection, Jesus emphasized one mission of the church, which is to reach the world with the gospel of Christ. This mission is still resonating with us today. It has not changed, but has remained the main mission of Christ. All other activities are just secondary missions, if at all there is such a thing. For some reason, we have neglected the main mission and have focused on secondary matters. The church has diverted from the core of God’s mission to something we may term as nonessential.

Just take a walk through town and pay attention to church posters hanging along roadsides. Most of them look like a witch doctor’s advertisement soliciting for customers. The focus is more on meeting human wants on the expense of human spiritual need. Christ did not die and resurrect so that we may marry, or get rich. The people were getting married and getting rich before He died, and rose from the dead. In fact, when He was born, the rich people from the east brought gifts to Him. So there were rich people before. Solomon had seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines. They had houses, designer clothes, expensive donkeys and horses for transportation. Jesus was born in a very financially disadvantaged family. He grew up in a family and society that was regarded as poverty stricken. What was Jesus’ mission then?

8  But the one who indulges in a sinful life is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God was revealed was to undo and destroy the works of the devil. 1 John 3: 8

The mission of Christ was to come and destroy the works of the devil. The devil’s works are visibly seen in one’s life of sin. The devil’s works are not seen in one’s single marital status or one’s lack of money. Apostle Paul was unmarried and yet was mightily used by God. We  cannot specialize in breaking marital distress and other distresses in church. The mission of the church is what Jesus achieved for man upon His resurrection, which is the salvation of souls. One may get married in church but that is not the mission of Christ.

He did not die so that you can get married. You can marry without salvation. There are many married people without Christ. The reason why the church exists is so that it can light the world with the gospel of Christ. That is evangelizing men and women with the word of God. This is not to say that God cannot provide a way for you to get married. He can, but that is not the reason He died. Jesus said to seek His Kingdom and His righteousness and then all these things the unbelievers seek after will be added to you, Matthew 6: 33.

33 “So above all, constantly chase after the realm of God’s kingdom and the righteousness that proceeds from him. Then all these less important things will be given to you abundantly. Matthew 6: 33

Seek the interests of His Kingdom and His righteousness and then the less important things like car, house, clothes, food, wife, husband, job, promotion shall be added to you. Do not seek the things, but seek the God’s business, which is ‘The Commission.’ The commission is to go into the world and preach the gospel. Be on kingdom business in your business, job, marriage, and career. Preach the gospel to the people around. When you focus on God’s business which is soul winning, you will definitely not lack the things you need to carry out God’s business effectively. It is about His business, brethren. His commission. What have you committed yourself to?
