THE BODY MINISTRY

For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many. 1 Corinthians 12: 12 – 14

The church has been compared to a human body, and how the human body operates. The human body consists of many parts and have different functions that operate in sync. Some parts may appear to be insignificant but their function in the body plays a big role in the well being of the body. Any decision to cut off such a part from the body may compromise the functionality of the body. The parts of the body are co-dependent. None can exist independently. The apostle Paul put it in this way in 1 Corinthians 12: 17, if the whole body was an eye, where would be the hearing? The body cannot function properly when it is one dimensional. it’s effectiveness depends on it’s diversity.

But God has carefully designed each member and placed it in the body to function as he desires. A diversity is required, for if the body consisted of one single part, there wouldn’t be a body at all! 1 Corinthians 12: 18, 19

The tragedy in the church is to reduce it to one dimensional. This is when believers go for fellowship to receive and retire home. The church is the light of the world. It is an oasis in the desert and it’s purpose is to supply the message of Christ to the world. It is sad to realize that only few parts of the body are functional. This poor architecture in the church has deprived the church from having impact and influence in it’s environment. It’s about time to craft an architecture of systems in the church that will bring about order and effectiveness. The human body works as a system, and its main organ systems in the body are co-dependent. The human body is able to do what it does because of its working systems.

The church can be effective when the systems are working and every member of a local church is participating fully. When we all realize our place and role in the body and begin to function, the church will be like a tree planted by the rivers of water. It will flourish naturally and bear much fruit.
