Overcoming Inferiority Complex
By Apostle Felix
14 And the LORD looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?
15 And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.Judges 6: 14, 15
Inferiority complex is “a basic feeling of inadequacy and insecurity, deriving from actual or imagined physical or psychological deficiency.” It is a feeling that denotes a strong sense of being less than. An inferiority complex can be compared to a “superiority complex” where an individual has an “exaggerated opinion of one’s abilities and accomplishments.” Both are negative complexes.
Gideon most likely had an inferiority complex. He had a very strong sense of being less than the people he grew up with in his community. He regarded himself as one from a weak and poor family and looked at himself as the least person in his father’s house. That was quite a pathetic way of one looking at himself. Inferiority complexes are developed early in life, when one is still a child. This is often due to invalidation experiences in family circles or school environments. Adults who were once bullied and experienced rejection in childhood will manifest inferiority complexes in adulthood. Here below are some of the symptoms of inferiority complex:
1. Chronic insecurity in relationships.
2. Often the feelings of low self esteem in the presence of other people.
3. Always negative about oneself, others and life in general.
4. Under the oppression of anxiety and depression.
5. Take criticism very personal.
6. Gives up easily on assignments.
7. Very low motivated.
8. Normally, does not take compliments seriously.
How To Overcome
8 And he bowed himself, and said, What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am?
9 Then the king called to Ziba, Saul’s servant, and said unto him, I have given unto thy master’s son all that pertained to Saul and to all his house.
2 Samuel 9: 8, 9
Inferiority complex hurts its victim and also those around. It is a complex that can lead to self hate, and eventually self destruction. It is, therefore, necessary to find a solution to this problem of inferiority complex. Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan had developed an inferiority complex due to the circumstances surrounding his upbringing. The healing started for Mephibosheph when he was taken out of Lodebar, a place for the poor. His physical condition of been lame in both legs had contributed to his problem of inferiority complex. Mephibosheph was delivered out of Lodebar by David and was delivered into the palace. In most cases, inferiority complex is due to man’s sinful condition, and the only solution to man’s problem is getting born again in Christ. Man receives validation from his relationship with God when he decides to be translated from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light. The next thing that brings healing is the transformation of one’s live through the renewing of mind. Mephibosheph was taken out from an inferior environment, and brought into the palace, but he still saw himself as a dead dog. That’s the case with anyone who believes in Christ. They are delivered from the inferior life, which is sin into the life of God, but still think of themselves less than others. One’s identity changes as soon as one accepts JESUS as Lord and Savior. You are no longer an inferior person, but you are now identified with the king of kings, who is Jesus. You have been made a king, a righteous person, endued with grace and power to reign in life through righteousness.
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Romans 12: 2
The children of Israel were delivered from Egypt but their minds were still affected by the experiences they had in Egypt. They left Egypt where they were made inferior but yet the inferiority mindset left with them. Their inferiority mindset made them to wander in the wilderness for forty years. Child of God, have your mind renewed by the word of God. Believe what the Lord says about you. Let the word of God be the meditation of your heart.
