Made In His Image

26  And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 

Genesis 1: 26

Another word that calls for attention is likeness. It is not referring to physical appearance as well. The word, likeness, comes from the Hebrew word, dhemuth, which means patterns. Pattern is an example set for others to follow. Pattern is like a structure established for everyone to duplicate. So then, when God said, let us man in our image and likeness…., He was referring to man duplicating the pattern or structure He had already established for dominion. The structure is to rule over creation by the BLESSING.

Likeness, therefore, is a pattern of God of how to rule, govern, master and lead which God had created. God has a pattern. The world has a pattern. Paul, the apostle referred to the patterns of this world and admonished the church to free itself from that pattern.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Romans 12: 2 (NIV)

Likeness is the way God operates in matters of governing His creation. God uses His word to sustain His creation, and He expects His children to govern the matters of this life after that same pattern.

He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.

Colossians 1:17

And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

Hebrews 1:3

The world has its own patterns that it uses to govern this world. And those patterns are totally contrary to the patterns of God. The pattern of God consists of the blessing and the pattern of this world consists of the curse.

You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.

Galatians 3: 1

It is very interesting to note that Paul used quite a strong term to describe the vulnerability of the church at Galatia. The Galatian church had received a different gospel from the one Paul had preached. After having had received the Spirit of God by grace through faith, the Galatian church reverted to ways of legalism that could not make them receive the Spirit. Trying to use the law to receive from God is using a wrong pattern that cannot work for those under the new covenant. God had provided a new pattern through Christ Jesus by which man can receive all God has provided. Similarly, the blessing has a modus operandi that is according to God’s pattern. It’s vitally important to discover that pattern in order to benefit from the blessing. Discover the structure. In our quest to discover the pattern or rather the structure God uses to govern His Kingdom, it is necessary to examine the anatomy of creation.
