The Prophets of Baal

One day, as we were going to the house of prayer, we encountered a young slave girl who had an evil spirit of divination, the spirit of Python. She had earned great profits for her owners by being a fortune-teller. She kept following us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Great High God, and they’re telling us how to be saved!” Acts 16: 16, 17

It is beyond any shadow of doubt that we have prophets of Baal in the church today. These kind of prophets have invaded the church at unprecedented and alarming rate. The question is, how did these prophets of Baal sneak into the church unnoticed? How did we find ourselves in this mess as the church? Every problem should have a genesis, and the correct diagnosis helps with administering correct remedy.

The prophets of Baal found their way into the church because the church had drifted from the gospel truth to another gospel. When the church drifted from the gospel truth, and introduced syncretism, the church went into apostasy. The church started well, but along the way it started introducing unbiblical practices and beliefs that actually led to the reformation in 15th century. The reformation was all about ‘faith in Christ Jesus.’ Nothing else, but Christ. This reformation led to a split from the Roman Catholic to Protestantism. The problem that led to apostasy of the church was mainly syncretism.

The church today is infested with prophets of Baal, who are using witchcraft, because of lack of sound doctrine. Genuine and honest men and women of God incorrectly divided the Word of God, and sincerely propagated the error. The error was assumed as the truth by the church. Most of those errors were to do with the mixing of the Old Testament practices, cultural practices and Christ. The concoction produced another gospel that paved a way for the prophets of Baal. It will not take prayer or exposing the prophets of Baal to end the era of falsehood. It will take another reformation. Jesus plus nothing! The Jesus plus nothing gospel will water tight the church against any invasion of falsehood. As long as the people are ignorant, they will continue patronizing these prophets of Baal.

How do prophets of Baal operate then? How can one identity them? The prophets of Baal operate by the expired Old Testament prophetic template and mixed with cultural African beliefs, seasoned with New Testament Bible verse references. Their strength is the ignorance of their audience. The prophets of Baal have monetized the prophetic ministry. It is for financial gain. Their main emphasis is financial prosperity, which is of course is in their favour. Does God want His children to prosper? Yes, of course but not on the expense of betraying the authenticity of the gospel of Christ.

The apostate kings of Israel always surrounded themselves with the prophets of Baal, whom they paid for their prophetic services. The church has been veiled from identifying the prophets of Baal because of the erroneous teachings. The another gospel that has been preached in church for so many years and the people have been grounded into a pseudo Jesus and baptized into another spirit.

For you seem to gladly tolerate anyone who comes to you preaching a pseudo-Jesus, not the Jesus we have preached. You have accepted a spirit and gospel that is false, rather than the Spirit and gospel you once embraced. How tolerant you have become of these imposters! 2 Corinthians 11: 2

Believers are unable to distinguish between the prophet of Baal and the prophet of God. The children of Israel had faced a similar challenge in the time of King Ahab, the son of Omri. Ahab was an evil king, who went and married Jezebel, the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians. The name of Ethbaal means, one with Baal. Jezebel, the wife of king Ahab was brought up in the worship of Baal. So, upon getting married, she introduced the prophets of Baal into Israel. These were diviners, who resisted the genuine prophetic voice of God. They veiled the people from seeing and identifying falsehood. The people were under the spell of the prophets of Baal.

And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. 1 Kings 18: 21
