Expansion Through Service

Expansion Through Service

By Apostle Felix

9  For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;
10  Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you.

Romans 1: 9, 10

The early church experienced tremendous, explosive growth fueled by the sacrificial service and unwavering commitment of believers to the Gospel. Following the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost, Peter delivered a single sermon that resulted in three thousand souls being added to the fold. This exponential expansion was so immense that it immediately alarmed the ruling authorities. Remarkably, this movement erupted in the very land where Jesus had recently been rejected and crucified, inevitably drawing fierce persecution—particularly from entrenched religious establishments.

1  Now, Saul agreed to be an accomplice to Stephen’s stoning and participated in his execution. From that day on, a great persecution of the church in Jerusalem began. All the believers scattered into the countryside of Judea and among the Samaritans, except the apostles who remained behind in Jerusalem.
2  God-fearing men gave Stephen a proper burial and mourned greatly over his death.
3  Then Saul mercilessly persecuted the church of God, going from house to house into the homes of believers to arrest both men and women and drag them off to prison.

Acts 8: 1 – 3

The early church faced fierce persecution for preaching the Gospel, yet that very opposition paradoxically fueled its explosive growth. To the established religious entities, the expansion of the church posed an existential threat, driving them to persecute believers in a bid to safeguard their own authority. Ultimately, however, the church expanded through active service—as believers ministered to God and one another using their unique spiritual gifts. Every believer is endowed with specific gifts meant to advance the Kingdom of God on earth. When believers underuse those gifts, the church becomes spiritually incapacitated, because true ministry happens only when we offer what God has placed in our hands. Let us not be like the servant who buried his master’s talent out of fear or negligence; we are called to put our gifts to work.

16  Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.
17  And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.
18  But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.

Matthew 25: 16 – 18

The Master distributed the talents to the three servants proportionally, giving to each according to their respective ability. It was a fair and deliberate assignment; yet, the servant who received a single talent went and buried it. This inaction was not because he was given too little—even one talent represented a massive fortune, equivalent to decades of wages. Likewise, God has entrusted us with far too much wealth, skill, and opportunity to allow any of it to remain buried. Every gift inside you is designed to serve and bless others. The more you deploy what you have been given, the more your capacity and effectiveness increase. True expansion always follows faithful stewardship.
