Christ: The Ultimate Fulfilment

15  Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.
16  Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
17  And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. 

Galatians 3: 15 – 17

The gospel of Christ is the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham. This promise centered on the “seed,” which is Christ Himself. Ultimately, the Bible is a book about Jesus; therefore, when Scripture is read, He must remain the central focus. Jesus demonstrated this when He read from the scroll, specifically seeking out the passage written about Him. Rather than looking for anyone else, He looked solely for Himself.

20  And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
21  And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

Luke 4: 20, 21

When Jesus read the famous words of Isaiah 61:1, every eye in the room was fastened on Him as He became the centre of attention. In the same way, you cannot truly find Christ in the Bible without having your entire focus drawn to Him. When Christ is faithfully preached and taught in our churches, believers will fix their eyes on Him, naturally turning away from extra-biblical practices. Indeed, when Christ is truly revealed, personality cults and man-worship disappear. The reason modern churchgoers have made man the centre of worship is that Christ has been veiled from them—and whenever Christ is hidden, people will always find a substitute to worship.

When Christ is veiled, people begin to celebrate and practice the very shadows and types that were meant to point to the fulfilment of the promise made to Abraham. Ignorance of this fulfilment in Christ is the primary crisis in the church today. When a congregation fails to discern that the promise has been met in Him, it inevitably resuscitates dead, expired shadows. Consequently, the church focuses its emphasis on past promises and Old Testament prophets, reminiscing about the days of Elijah and Moses instead of exalting Christ.

5  While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

Matthew 17: 5

Knowing that the church would historically attempt to erect three separate tents—for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah—God intentionally shifted the disciples’ focus away from the law and the prophets and onto Jesus, the ultimate fulfilment. Sadly, Peter’s ancient proposal to build these three shelters was never truly abandoned. Due to a lack of understanding regarding Christ’s finished work, the modern church continues to propagate the tents of the prophets, the law, and grace side by side. This compromise has left the church divided and inconsistent in its presentation. God forbid! We urgently need the church to come to a full understanding that both the law and the prophets are completely fulfilled in Christ.
