Addicted To Jesus
By Apostle Felix
13 Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.
14 Let all your things be done with charity.
15 I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,)1 Corinthians 16: 13 – 15
The word ‘addiction’ is a common word used in our everyday life. It is a word normally used to refer to those who are substance dependent. These are individuals who are using drugs or an addicted to a certain harmful habit. Addiction can be explained as having a, usually, chronic, compulsive, and harmful physiological or psychological dependence on a substance (drugs, alcohol) or behavior (gambling, internet). It implies being unable to stop, craving, and continuing despite negative consequences. The word addiction is always seen in a negative light. But it is also possible to be addicted to something good. Something that can benefit you positively. One can be addicted to reading the Bible and the habit would produce positive results – of course a transformed life. So, we are going to discuss addiction in the light of God’s light, producing a godly character.
20 “My old identity has been co-crucified with Messiah and no longer lives; for the nails of his cross crucified me with him. And now the essence of this new life is no longer mine, for the Anointed One lives his life through me—we live in union as one! My new life is empowered by the faith of the Son of God who loves me so much that he gave himself for me, and dispenses his life into mine!
Galatians 2: 20
Addictions are so powerful to the extent of controlling the person. A person addicted to drugs, such as heroin or cocaine will be a slave of heroin or cocaine. The person will do anything to have access to drugs. Some of the petty crimes committed, especially in the Western world are drug addiction related. An addiction becomes a compelling force, driving the person to do the unthinkable. On the contrary, one can be addicted to Jesus, and be totally dependent on Him for everything. The example we have of someone who was addicted to Jesus is apostle Paul. He was a man who was addicted to the point of declaring that his identity had been co-crucified with Christ, and that he longer lived, but Christ did through his life. He was a man who had made a resolute to live for Christ. His entire life was about serving Christ.
The Benefits of Addiction To Jesus:
1. Your faith will be absolutely in Christ and His finished work.
Paul said that the righteous shall live by their faith.
11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
Galatians 3: 11
Faith is key to living in the kingdom of God. You cannot thrive spiritually as a child of God without faith in Christ and His finished work. It takes an addiction to Jesus to solely trust in what Jesus has done for us.
2. The Jesus addicts are led by the Spirit of God.
14 The mature children of God are those who are moved by the impulses of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 8: 14
It is an addiction to Christ that makes to be led by the Spirit of God effective. Those who are addicted to drugs obey the impulses and demands of their cravings. So, an addiction to Jesus will also make us to easily obey the impulses of the Holy Spirit.
