Why Generosity?

Why Generosity?

By Apostle Felix

23  True lovers of God are filled with longings for what is pleasing and good, but the wicked can only expect doom.
24  Generosity brings prosperity, but withholding from charity brings poverty.
25  Those who live to bless others will have blessings heaped upon them, and the one who pours out his life to pour out blessings will be saturated with favour.

Proverbs 11: 23 – 25

Generosity flows directly from a heart of gratitude for everything the Lord has done for us, whereas ingratitude breeds a stingy and selfish spirit. True thankfulness is ultimately expressed through our generosity. When someone experiences God’s hand raising them out of poverty into prosperity, generosity should be their natural response; it is a tragedy to receive the Lord’s help only to turn away from His promptings. Unfortunately, many who have been blessed by God choose to turn a blind eye to human suffering and withhold their resources from the work of His Kingdom. In contrast, the broken, sinful woman who was deeply forgiven by Jesus demonstrated ultimate gratitude. She returned to Him, breaking open an expensive alabaster box of perfume to anoint Him, pouring out her costliest possession as a beautiful display of thanksgiving for His mercy.

7  There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat.
8  But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste?
9  For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor.

Matthew 26: 7 – 9

This woman’s generosity was fueled entirely by her profound gratitude for what the Lord had done for her. She poured the exceptionally costly perfume over Jesus without a second thought to its financial value, considering Christ’s mercy to be far more precious than the ointment itself. Because of her generosity, her act of worship directly prepared our Lord and Savior’s body for burial, forever partnering her generosity with the preaching of the Gospel.
You may have heard people argue that if God wants the Gospel preached, He should miraculously supply the financial resources Himself. While it is true that God is our provider, He chooses to fund the advancement of His Kingdom through the generosity of people like you and me. God operates through human hands; everything He accomplishes on the earth, He does through mankind. When He set out to save humanity, He became a man. When He wants to reach a city today, He sends a man.

5  Now, send some men to Joppa at once. Have them find a man named Simon the Rock,
6  who is staying as a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea.”

Acts 10: 5, 6

When God wanted the Gospel to be preached to Cornelius and his household, He intentionally sent for Peter instead of using angels. Though an angel appeared to Cornelius, it was human messengers who were sent to Joppa to ask Peter to come and preach. This highlights a fundamental truth: man is the primary medium God chooses to use on earth. Consequently, if we are unwilling to yield to Him, the work of God on earth will suffer—not because God is incapable, but because mankind is uncooperative. Generosity is the ultimate proof of our willingness to be used by God. It actively expands our capacity to receive and handle more of what the Lord has in store for us. As Scripture promises, a generous soul will always prosper; where there is hilarious generosity giving, divine expansion is sure to follow.
