15  Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17  And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. 

1 John 2: 15 – 17

The Word of God warns us against loving the world and the things in it, making it clear that we cannot love both the world and the Father at the same time. It is an absolute choice: you either love the world or you love God. In fact, Scripture emphatically states that if anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in them. Therefore, when someone claims to follow Christ but clings to worldly desires, their devotion must be scrutinised.
Unfortunately, the church today is filled with people living double standards—devout believers on Sunday, but completely worldly the rest of the week. What does worldliness actually mean? It is an obsession with material wealth, social status, and personal pleasure.
As children of God, we are called to be set apart from the world. Yet, many believers still strive to live, look, and behave just like it. This does not mean we should hate everything in creation; rather, we must hate worldliness, which is a lifestyle that contradicts the nature of God. The Bible commands us to go into all the world and preach the gospel, but it never commands us to become like the world. Our true purpose is to enter the world to transform it—turning the nations back to Christ.

17  For this reason, “Come out from among them and be separate,” says the Lord. “Touch nothing that is unclean, and I will embrace you.

15  And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

The Lord has mandated that we preach the gospel through the way we live. The Bible calls us the light of the world and commands us to shine brightly before all people. How can we truly shine if we look and act exactly like the world? We can only reflect Christ when we stand firmly for the values of the Kingdom of God and refuse to bend to worldly pressures. Conforming to these pressures carries serious consequences; it dilutes our witness and brings reproach upon the holy name of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

4  You have become spiritual adulterers who are having an affair, an unholy relationship with the world. Don’t you know that flirting with the world’s values places you at odds with God? Whoever chooses to be the world’s friend makes himself God’s enemy! 

James 4: 4

One of the greatest dangers of worldliness is the spiritual coldness it introduces into a believer’s heart toward the Kingdom of God. It is impossible to be consumed by the world and remain zealous for God at the same time; you cannot romance the world while remaining deeply in love with your Creator.
When a spouse is unfaithful, we call it adultery. Scripture teaches that, in the same way, friendship with the world is spiritual adultery and infidelity in the sight of God. This unfaithfulness creates a barrier of enmity between the believer and the Lord. It does not mean that God stops loving you, but rather that through your actions, you align yourself as an enemy of God. Consider a husband who continues to love an unfaithful wife: though his love remains, she becomes cold and indifferent to him because of her straying lifestyle. Similarly, the danger of worldliness is that it numbs a believer, leaving them entirely indifferent and cold toward God and His kingdom.
