Taking Over Through the Spirit Leading

14  The mature children of God are those who are moved by the impulses of the Holy Spirit.
15  And you did not receive the “spirit of religious duty,” leading you back into the fear of never being good enough. But you have received the “Spirit of full acceptance,” enfolding you into the family of God. And you will never feel orphaned, for as he rises up within us, our spirits join him in saying the words of tender affection, “Beloved Father!”
16  For the Holy Spirit makes God’s fatherhood real to us as he whispers into our innermost being, “You are God’s beloved child!”

Romans 8: 14 – 16

The enemy uses condemnation to stop believers from trusting God for big things—a weapon that, unfortunately, many churches preach. Hardline ministers often deliver harsh, Pharisaical messages aimed at enforcing holiness. By demanding outward behavioral changes rather than letting the Holy Spirit work, they foster an environment of guilt. Consequently, believers resort to pretending all is well just to satisfy the preacher. Ultimately, human effort cannot subdue the flesh; only submission to the Holy Spirit can.

12  So then, beloved ones, the flesh has no claims on us at all, and we have no further obligation to live in obedience to it.
13  For when you live controlled by the flesh, you are about to die. But if the life of the Spirit puts to death the corrupt ways of the flesh, we then taste his abundant life. 

Romans 8: 12, 13

When Paul addressed the problem of the flesh in the church, he did not demand that believers handle it legalistically like the Pharisees. Instead, he emphasised submitting to the leading of the Holy Spirit rather than relying on personal moral uprightness. While moral uprightness is important, it is not what qualifies us to walk in the Spirit. In other words, you do not have to achieve moral perfection before the Holy Spirit can lead you. In fact, the very reason the Holy Spirit dwells within us is to help us in our human weaknesses.

26  And in a similar way, the Holy Spirit takes hold of us in our human frailty to empower us in our weakness. For example, at times we don’t even know how to pray, or know the best things to ask for. But the Holy Spirit rises up within us to super-intercede on our behalf, pleading to God with emotional sighs too deep for words.

Romans 8: 26

The Holy Spirit empowers us when we are weak and uncertain of what to do, making our reliance on Him absolutely critical. You cannot rely on human effort to overcome the flesh. Many people wonder what the flesh actually is: it is simply an attitude of independence from God. The flesh rejects the finished work of Christ, choosing instead to rely on self-ability to please the Lord. Because of this, “the flesh” often refers to believers who are exhausting themselves trying to keep the law to achieve righteousness. As a child of God, you did not receive a spirit of religious duty that drags you back into the fear of never being good enough. Tragically, many in the church have been trapped by this religious mindset, living perpetually under fear and condemnation. Yet, you cannot fully step into your divine purpose with fear and condemnation hanging over you.

1  So now the case is closed. There remains no accusing voice of condemnation against those who are joined in life-union with Jesus, the Anointed One.
2  For the “law” of the Spirit of life flowing through the anointing of Jesus has liberated us from the “law” of sin and death.

Romans 8: 1, 2

The primary goal of condemnation is to rob you of your divine inheritance—the first and greatest of which is sonship. The Spirit of God has already set you free from the law of sin and death; indeed, it is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Because the law gives strength to sin, sin creates a psychological and spiritual barrier between you and your Father. The more sin-conscious you become, the more separated from God you will feel. Ultimately, you cannot comfortably call God “Father” while living under the cloud of condemnation. This is the exact reason Jesus laid down His life: so that you could walk fully free from the law of sin and death.
